Private Tuition - Learning from a Master Wildlife Artist.
I have always enjoyed teaching people, and it is my pleasure to offer you one to one exclusive tuition either in my studio or in the comfort of your own home. I have become known throughout the world as a teacher of fine art and students visit me for tuition from as far away as Canada, India, Rome, Germany, Austria, Finland and even Australia.
Learning to paint well is something that takes years to master and in this fast moving world it can be very frustrating for talented people to have to wait so long before thoroughly getting to grips with the techniques of painting.
The education system is no help at all. Fine art technique is just not covered these days and so artists are left in the dark, experimenting with a trial and error system to gradually bring them to an understanding of how master artists do what they do.
This is where I come in. I can show you in a day what might take you a year or more to work out for yourself. I genuinely enjoy teaching and I am very happy to help as many artists as I can to realize their full artistic potential.
I offer classes in the following mediums
- pastel painting technique
- Oil Painting technique
- Acrylic painting technique
My area of expertise for teaching is
- Painting animals - particularly fur
- Painting backgrounds, foliage, grasses and trees
- How to paint a portrait. Portraiture
What happens in a typical lesson?
I have a simple philosophy towards teaching, and that is that the student comes first. My lessons are all about you. I offer my skills and wealth of artistic experience. Whatever you feel would be of most benefit to you is what we do. You would choose which medium you would like to learn and you decide what subject you would like to concentrate upon. It might be an animals fur for example. I then discuss with you whether you would prefer to watch me demonstrate fur techniques, whether you would like to have a go yourself under my guidance, or perhaps you would like to do both. Whatever is most beneficial to you is what we do.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
You don't need to bring any art materials with you, we will use the art materials that I have in my studio. The only thing that might be a help to the lesson is if you could bring some examples of your work along. It is of great help for me to properly evaluate the level you are at and the areas that I feel could be improved upon.
What are the hours of the lesson and is lunch provided?
Lessons begin at 10 am. We have a lunch break around 1pm. Lunch is provided. (Please let me know beforehand if you have any special dietary requirements.) We then work into the afternoon and finish anytime between 4 and 6 pm. ( I prefer not to have a fixed finishing time as it all depends upon when you feel you have absorbed enough for the day )
What does it cost?
A full days private tuition costs £350 inclusive of lunch Tea/Coffee/biscuits. To arrange a tuition with me, simply contact me using the contact form or email: email@example.com and we can then discuss mutually convenient dates.
I am also able to offer luxury accomodation at my studio in Buxton. Private tuition plus accomodation is £425 per day. Please click HERE for further details or visit the page 'Art courses in England'

What have other students felt about their lessons with you?
I'm proud to list below, some of the great testimonials I have received from my students:
“Inspiring, talented and friendly, both to wildlife nature and to me as Eric's student.....!”
It was an extraordinary journey for me to travel all the way from Melbourne, Australia to Buxton in UK.
During the valuable 3 days' learning and teaching, I found it was the greatest gift which Eric gave me in
my artist life.
Your great personality and compassion to the natural world reflects equally in your hospitality and
drawing skills which has made my learning experience worth all the efforts. It has definitely been a
helpful tool to pursue further in my wildlife drawings.
Eric, thank you so much for your inspiration and your lovely wife Karin's freshly-baked cakes, coffee and
wonderful conversations made my stay even more memorable and complete.

Just a short note to say how much I enjoyed the days tuition. I really appreciated that you adapted the lesson to suit my specific needs. Watching you work has really inspired me to try and master the use of pastels to the best of my ability, I still cant quite believe you produced the Jimmy Hendrix drawing to such a standard in so short a time. I would recommend anyone seeking advice or inspiration to spend a day at your studio. Many thanks and best wishes
for the future,
"Thank you so much for such an inspirational tuition day at your
studio. To share a passion for wildlife and art, see your
magnificent work and also be shown painting techniques by such
an accomplished wildlife artist all in one go made for a fabulous
experience and a memorable one. Lunch was lovely and hearing
about your safari adventures was the perfect accompaniment - I
felt as if I was in the company of a friend I'd known for years! I
hope to do it all again soon"
C Evans, Derbyshire
"... I had a thoroughly intensive day, learning to add
depth and perspective to my work. I was looked
after for the whole day, and it was a great
experience. The quality of tuition in these
workshops would certainly help anyone learn to
reach their full potential. It really is wonderful for
an artist with so much experience to share it with
you, to help you to move forward in your own work.
Thank you Eric"
Jo-Anne Clarke, UK.
Eric thank you so much for a wonderful day. It was a privilege to meet you, see your fantastic paintings and have the experience of seeing you work. I feel I have learned so much. You are such a generous, understanding and thoughtful tutor and you were so keen to make it my day. I appreciated your helpful comments about my own abilities and you have given me the confidence to move onwards and upwards. Your hospitality was exceptional. It was certainly an experience I shall never forget.

"Just wanted to drop you a note to say thank-you once again for yesterday.
It was very kind of you to share with me some of your techniques and knowledge and to give me so much
advice on such a wide variety of things. I was very nervous about the day initially but you were extremely
welcoming and made it very easy and enjoyable for me. I feel that I have gained a huge amount from the
day, (including perhaps a little bit more confidence and self belief in my own abilities!), and I am excited
at the prospect of putting some of this newly acquired advice/knowledge into practice. Being in your
studio and seeing the amazing work that you produce was a real privilege and inspiration!
Wendy Warren , Hampshire, UK.
"Having never had an art lesson before I didn’t know what to expect but what I received was beyond my expectations. I came away buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm wanting to put what I’d learnt into practice. I watched as Eric produced a tiger from a pencil line drawing into a animal that lived and breathed and you could reach through the canvas and stoke it I can sincerely recommend a lesson with Eric, you’ll learn so much and
be energised into producing your own works. A word of warning get to the cakes before Eric does!"
Colin Bulpin, UK.
I had a list of issues I wanted to resolve in my work and technique and had hoped to maybe get the answers to one or two of them by the end of the day. What actually happened was that after discussing my needs and critiquing some of my work Eric resolved all of my questions within an hour or so. It was a pleasure to spend time with such a knowledgeable, dedicated and generous artist and the day flew by in no time. I left feeling inspired and confident about my future development. I would urge anyone who is serious about painting to spend a day with Eric and like me you will come away with the knowledge it would have taken years to otherwise discover and absorb.
