I have studied lions for many years in Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Camping amongst them in the Serengeti, observing them in the magnificent Ngorongoro crater and tracking them on foot in Zimbabwe. They are a favourite subject for me.

I am often asked what is my favourite wildlife subject to paint.It's a difficult question as I love to paint all of the big cats but if I was forced to make a choice I would have to say the male lion is top of my list.
They are all so unique and their characters shine through their eyes.
I admire the strength, courage and innate dignity they all seem to possess and this Serengeti lion has all of these qualities in abundance.

A lioness crouches motionless as she waits in ambush on the African plains. The struggle for survival is not an easy one. She knows to remain perfectly still behind the only available cover in this barren landscape. Not just tooth and claw but intelligence and teamwork will be required to ensure success.

In the foreground I have scattered bones, symbolic of the countless struggles that have taken place over millions of years.

If you look closely you may notice part of a jawbone with two molar teeth. A human perhaps, suggesting that we too are locked into the struggle and just like the lioness, our success on this planet is far from guaranteed.
