It's prominent ear tufts can be raised or lowered according to it's mood. ( This owl is obviously in a good mood ) it feeds upon a large range of prey from insects to larger mammals such as rabbits and hares and even game birds. This is an intimate portrait of the owl where I wanted to focus attention upon it's beautiful eyes and mottled feather pattern. I chose a limited tonal range for the painting and kept the background simple, but harmonious for added effect. The original, framed in a dark wood frame with cream inlay, looked very striking. France had fallen to Hitler along with most of Europe, leaving Great Britain to stand alone against all the horrors he would have brought to this world. If Britain had fallen, surrendered, or gone for a compromise peace, long years of evil tyranny would have descended upon Europe and in time, the world. It would have fallen to Russia to decide whether to challenge Hitler, a very difficult thing for it to attempt without a powerful ally in Europe, as it would have been for the United States to do so, without a secure base on the British Isles. Both powers were influenced by Britains will to fight on, a will driven and personified by Winston Churchill. The battle of Britain was won, and the whole course of world history was altered decidedly for the better. As the American journalist Edward R. Murrow commented; 'Churchill mobilised the English language and sent it into battle' 'I have nothing to offer' Churchill said, '..but blood toil tears and sweat. You ask what is our policy? I can say it is to wage war by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all our strength that god can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. You ask what is our aim? I felt very much as though I was visiting a person who clearly held as much of an opinion about me as I about him. His enormous physical and spiritual presence was all-encompassing. Fortunately for me he was a benevolent soul who tolerated my presence. I noted little white butterflies dancing around him. Nature's perfect juxtaposition of strength and fragility before my very eyes. Only weeks later, he and his entire family were wiped out as target practice in a human conflict. Mighty as he was, he was also fragile and vulnerable as is everything in nature, and every one of us. Strength is relative and illusory. As with the fragility of the butterfly. We are all neither yet we are both. A lioness crouches motionless as she waits in ambush on the African plains. The struggle for survival is not an easy one. She knows to remain perfectly still behind the only available cover in this barren landscape. Not just tooth and claw but intelligence and teamwork will be required to ensure success. In the foreground I have scattered bones, symbolic of the countless struggles that have taken place over millions of years. If you look closely you may notice part of a jawbone with two molar teeth. Oil on canvas, 30 x 20 inches. The weather can be a very unpredictable affair in the Highlands of Scotland. It is an environment suited to the hardy. Red deer find themselves vulnerable to the extremes of climate especially in the winter when many will perish from the cold leaving only the strongest to survive. This painting is all about that evolutionary struggle for survival which keeps the herd strong. Here a young buck follows a wise and mature stag to the safety of the valley below as the harsh weather sets in. He is momentarily illuminated by a shaft of sunlight and in that moment, we wonder whether he will have the wisdom and strength to follow in his footsteps. I consider myself very lucky to have actually spent time in the frozen north of Canada observing polar bears in their natural habitat. I saw this magnificent bear one morning in Wapusk, Canada. It was -30 degrees and he was swimming from berg to berg as though it was a heated swimming pool. It was so cold that to remove my hand from my glove long enough to take a photograph was an intensely painful affair, and yet there he was, perfectly adapted and happy. France had fallen to Hitler along with most of Europe, leaving Great Britain to stand alone against all the horrors he would have brought to this world. If Britain had fallen, surrendered, or gone for a compromise peace, long years of evil tyranny would have descended upon Europe and in time, the world. It would have fallen to Russia to decide whether to challenge Hitler, a very difficult thing for it to attempt without a powerful ally in Europe, as it would have been for the United States to do so, without a secure base on the British Isles. Both powers were influenced by Britain’s will to fight on, a will driven and personified by Winston Churchill. The battle of Britain was won, and the whole course of world history was altered decidedly for the better. As the American journalist Edward R. Murrow commented; 'Churchill mobilised the English language and sent it into battle' 'I have nothing to offer' Churchill said, '..but blood toil tears and sweat. You ask what is our policy? I can say it is to wage war by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all our strength that god can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word; It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be. What better subject could there be for a portrait painter than this man? ...I just had to take some time out from my wildlife work to do this. My thinking behind this painting was the observation that hornets and wasps are the tigers of the insect world. Apex predators, fearless in their domain and like the tiger, wearing stripes to display their status to all around them. I imagined a fleeting moment in time, where these kings of different worlds come face to face, and in that brief moment an understanding passes between them, an epiphany where each in its own way, gains insight into the nature of the other. This is a painting I've had in my mind for many years and I'm happy that I found time to paint it over the Christmas period. I imagined a tiger captivated by a strange artefact before him. The skull of an extinct sabretooth tiger that had been unearthed by an eroding riverbank. It was originally conceived with the title 'Or not to be' as a question mark hanging over the fate of all big cats past and present, but as the painting began to take shape the strong connection between the tiger and his long extinct ancestor began to take on a spiritual quality all of its own, and the ground upon which he lay, appeared to me to be in more of a secret, sacred place, an altar even, known only to tigers, and hence the title 'Where Tigers Pray'. To enhance this feeling I gave the background forest a mystical, magical atmosphere. It is a fantasy piece, but I like that quality in a painting. I hope you do too. Accelerating deforestation and rampant poaching mean this noble creature could end up like the now extinct Javan and Balinese tigers. They are precious rare creatures. In 2014 I had the great honour of meeting The commander of Apollo 17, Captain Eugene Cernan, veteran of Gemini 9, Apollos 10 and 17. He is the last man to walk on the moon. A man that lived on the moon for three days and is one of only three human beings ever to voyage to the moon on two separate occasions. I can't possibly tell you how much it meant for me to meet the great man himself, the actual subject of my painting. He has been an inspirational hero to me ever since I was a child. 'That's impossible!' he joked to me as he admired my painting. 'Nobody else was there to see us both together like that'. That's where art comes in, to tell the tale that photographs can't I said.
